How do I limit adult material on iPhone/iPad with Purity Browser App

How do I lock down my kid's iPhone/iPad with Purity Browser App & Apple ScreenTime?

Purity Browser blocks porn and reports any attempts to access inappropriate content to a parent.

Apple provides free parental controls, called Screen Time, for iPhone® and iPad®. Screen Time has many features: app time limits, adjustable content settings for each age, device passcode restrictions, and much more. This article highlights the Screen Time features on iOS 14 or 15 that work well with the Purity Browser app.

Install Purity Browser App

Click here to get the Purity App or search Purity Browser in the app store and install it.

The Purity Browser allows you to browse the internet but will block inappropriate content and can report it to an email address you set.

Enable Screen Time and Create a Passcode

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone® or iPad®.
  2. Select “Screen Time.”
The first page of the Settings app on iOS 14, selecting Apple's parental control feature, Screen Time.
  3. Now select “Use Screen Time Passcode.”
  4. Then enter in a 4-digit passcode. You will be asked to re-enter the code for verification.
  5. In March 2020, Apple released a new feature for iOS 13 and above called Screen Time Passcode Recovery. This feature allows you to reset the Screen Time Passcode via an Apple ID.
SUGGESTION 1: The parent can enter in his/her own Apple ID. The passcode can then be reset using the parent’s Apple ID. Allies can create a free Apple ID on Apple’s website, even if they don’t have an Apple device.
SUGGESTION 2: The parent can change the child’s Apple ID password before setting up the Screen Time Passcode. This way the child will be less able to “recover the passcode” and access the Screen Time settings.
NOTE: We do not know your Screen Time Passcode, so if it’s lost or forgotten, you must contact Apple Support.
  6. If you selected “Cancel,” you’ll be asked to confirm that choice.
  7. Whether you skipped “Passcode Recovery” or not, you should now have created a passcode!

  3. Now tap “Content and Privacy Restrictions.”
  4. Select “Allowed Apps” and enter your Screen Time Passcode.

Disable Installing/Deleting Apps

To prevent the child from installing inappropriate apps and/or browsers via the App Store, we recommend disabling the option to install apps. If you want to safeguard Purity from being uninstalled, you can also disable the ability to delete apps.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone® or iPad®.
  2. Tap “Screen Time.”
  3. Tap “Content & Privacy Restrictions.”
  4. Now, tap “iTunes & App Store Purchases” and enter your Screen Time passcode.
  5. Select “Installing Apps” and then select “Don’t Allow” to disable the ability to install apps. If you want to safeguard the Purity Browser app from being uninstalled, you can disable the ability to delete apps by selecting “Deleting Apps” and then “Don’t Allow.
  6. Select the “<Back” option in the upper left-hand corner.
  7. You’ll return to the iTunes & App Store Purchases screen and be able to view the changed setting.

Disable Siri

Siri is Apple’s built-in voice assistant! You can ask Siri about the weather, search the web, send texts, make phone calls, and more. Since you can use Siri to search the web, some parents find it helpful to disable Siri.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone® or iPad®.
  2. Tap “Screen Time.”
  3. Now tap “Content and Privacy Restrictions.”
  4. Tap “Content Restrictions.”
  5. Next, tap “Web Search Content.”
  6. Tap “Don’t Allow” to disable searching the web via Siri.

    Limit Adult Websites

This setting is a general blocker that limits access to many adult websites.

    1. Within Screen Time, tap “Content & Privacy Restrictions.”
    2. Now tap “Content Restrictions.”
    3. Select “Web Content”.
    4. By default, “Unrestricted Access” is the selection. Change that to “Limit Adult Websites.”
    5. If you want, you can add URLs to the “ALWAYS ALLOW” section to override the limit.

    The NEVER ALLOW List

The “Limit Adult Websites”  feature (from the previous section) will attempt to block explicit websites, but it’s not perfect. Some sites that contain adult material are not automatically filtered out. So use the NEVER ALLOW list to help you customize your filtering experience:

    1. Within Screen Time, tap “Content & Privacy Restrictions.”
    2. Now tap “Content Restrictions.”
    3. Select “Web Content”.
    4. Just below NEVER ALLOW tap “Add Website.”
    5. Type in the website you want to block, and then tap “Done.” Here is a list of websites that may contain mature content. Add them to the NEVER ALLOW list if you’d like to block them:
      • dogpile.com – A search engine that doesn’t reliably enforce safe search
      • ecosia.com
      • excite.com – A search engine that doesn’t reliably enforce safe search
      • flickr.com – An image-based website with thousands of pictures
